PW32MSlt Mail Slots
The PW32MSlt Mail Slot library encapsulates the Windows mailslots api. Windows mailslots are a way to send messages from one application to another which resides either on the same machine or on a remote machine. Mailslot messages use a connectionless transport model (UDP, port 138). Verification of message delivery is not guaranteed.
One way of thinking of mailslots is as a shared table. Someone has to create the table before others can reference it. The mailslot creator (server) is the only one who can read messages while anybody (client) can post messages. Messages can be broadcast by clients to mailslots without knowing who the server is. Mailslot names are limited to 8 characters and messages 424 bytes in length in order to be fully compatible with all versions of Windows.
Windows (typically NT) sends mailslot messages over all available installed, and active, protocols which can result in multiple copies of the same message being received. PW32MSlt includes an option which eliminates duplicates when the owner server receiving the message uses PW32MSlt. This option, when activated, adds a nine byte header to each message containing a header flag and an unique 64-bit number leaving 415 bytes available for the message contents. This header is automatically removed when PW32MSlt is receiving messages.
Minimum OS requirements: W95+, IE4+.
